King Alfred Chapter No. 3169 is one of the youngest Royal Arch Chapters in the Province of Somerset and adopted the name of its sponsoring Lodge. King Alfred of Wessex defeated the Danes at Edington in Somerset and thereafter his kingdom was left in peace.

He was of course the ancestor of our English Royal Line. The founders of King Alfred Chapter are to be congratulated for their inspiration in using the name of such an outstanding National Hero.

King Alfred Chapter was consecrated at Weston super Mare Masonic Hall in Tivoli Lane and have continued to meet without interruption.  The genesis of King Alfred Chapter was in January 1988 when the Grand Superintendent, E Comp T A Hughes requested that serious consideration should be given to forming a second Royal Arch Chapter in Weston-super-Mare. The other Royal Arch Chapter meeting in the town being Inkerman Chapter which was founded in 1869.

The new Chapter’s consecration was held at 2 pm on the 11th March 1989 and it was attended by twenty three founding companions, eleven members of the consecration team and forty eight visitors. Just before the ceremony the Grand Superintendent presented the Chapter with an inscribed Bible on behalf of the consecrating Officers.
