Consecrated 10th September 1954 Meets at The Masonic Hall, The Crescent, Taunton.

The consecration of the Chapter of St. George on the 10th September 1954 very much reflected the start of the Lodge of St George in 1906. At that time there was only one Craft Lodge in Taunton, the Lodge of Unanimity and Sincerity No. 261. The increase in popularity in Freemasonry at the start of the 20th century meant that there was an extremely long waiting list for initiation. As a result it was decided by the brethren of that Lodge to sponsor a new Craft Lodge. Thus in April 1906 the Lodge of St George came into being with all its founding members coming from the Lodge of Unanimity and Sincerity.

The Chapter’s 50th year celebration took place on the 28th October 2004 and we welcomed the Grand Superintendent E Comp Denis Calderley and the full Provincial team. An excellent ceremony took place in the Chapter with a memorable Oration given by the then Third Provincial Grand Principal, E Comp  D. John Bennett and the Taunton Temple was full with every seat taken. Prior to the meeting it has been noticed by all the Royal Arch Chapters who used the Temple in Taunton that the Principals Robes were becoming old and worn, so it was decided that all would contribute to the purchase of a new set. They were first worn at this ceremony.

After the ceremony all the Companions moved to the festive board where once again the room was full. The chapter committee had decided that to mark this special evening all those present would receive a gift of a “Firing Glass” embossed with the Chapter Crest. These were handed out after the toast had been given which was a fitting end to a wonderful evening.

The Chapter of St. George now continues to thrive and all the members look forward to the future with confidence.
