Insights into Insignia and Enlightenment on Aprons

It has been a busy few years following the covid break here at Benevolent Lodge. Hardly a meeting has gone by without ritual being performed with brethren being initiated, passed, raised or installed.

February’s meeting however proved to be the exception, when Ben Batley, Deputy Provincial Grand Master, who has recently joined the Lodge, treated us to a wonderful insight into the meaning and history of the Aprons and Insignia we all wear and often take for granted.

From Apprentice to Worshipful Master and Provincial toGrand Rank, aprons and regalia were expertly explained, and in many cases showcased, with brethren standing as required to make this a truly interactive talk.

For example, did you know that all aprons are based, size wise on an Entered Apprentice apron with the boarders being added increasing the size through Master Mason to Grand Officer to PGM – bigger and bigger, the white area always being that of an EA?

Ben’s talk was very well received by the brethren and was followed by some of the newer members delivering snippets from Solomon, adding yet more knowledge and insight to a fascinating evening.

The Festive Board being once again held at a local historic Inn just a short walk through Wells old city walls and as is now tradition the 446 Choir serenaded the guests with the Visitors Song!
