60 Years In Masonry For John Widdicombe

A number of old and bold members of the Lodge of St George No. 3158 descended on John Widdicombe’s apartment in Taunton on the 19th February, along with the Somerset Provincial Grand Master Ray Guthrie, on the occasion of the presentation of John’s 60th year in Freemasonry certificate. When the Lodge inquired if the PGM would present the certificate to John at his home, due to not being able to attend the Lodge for many years because of health issues , Ray was happy to oblige. John was initiated into the Lodge of St George 3158 in February 1965, having had to queue several years on the waiting list – which was not uncommon in those days. Progression was also slower in those days, having to wait a number of years just to become a Steward within the Lodge. John progressed as normal and took the Chair of the Lodge in 1982 and promotion to Provincial Grand Rank thereafter.
John joined The Chapter of St George and became the 1st Principle in 1998, gaining Provincial Grand Rank and is now an Honorary member of the Chapter. John’s first love in Masonry is the Knight’s Templar Degree; from joining the King Ina Preceptory No 211 in the mid 70’s John has applied himself and reached high office within both the Province and the Grand Priory. Being 90 years young means he is not so active in Masonry, due to declining mobility – but he still follows with great interest all that happens within The Province on his I-Pad and the Somerset Freemasonry Web pages.
John was very proud to receive his 60th year certificate and thanks the PGM for diverting to his home to present it. The Lodge of St George wishes John all the very best for the future. The photo above shows (L-R): Chris Cluff, John Widdicombe, PGM Ray, Ian Barrie and Rod Green.
